Beginning Of The End For Lionel Messi?

barcelona's new coach

As we watched Barcelona Version 2013/2014 lose to Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich by 2-0, though a friendly game,it was obvious Barcelona needed, not only desperately one or two central defenders but they need a solid coach with a winning Game plan, Urgently!

The Huge obstacle awaiting any Barcelona coach is that not only has to win titles, he has to do it in style and obliterate all opponents aside just as Pep Guardiola did or better, otherwise they would not be considered successful. What an uphill task for anyone!

When Gerardo “El Tata” Martino was announced as FC Barcelona’s new manager, some thought it was an April fool joke in the month of July. Martino who? El Tata or el papa? why not Luis Enrique Guus Hiddink? etc these and more the questions that filled and shocked the Air waves.

Many have attributed his appointment to the demands and influence of Lionel Messi, who is said to have specifically sponsored this with the participation of his father.

For those who are unaware, Barcelona’s Coach Tito Villanova had to unfortunately abdicate his post with immediate effect due to a reoccurrence of the throat cancer that he has been battling for some time now and needs intense treatment that impedes his capability to function full time. Very Sad!

Who Is Gerardo “El Tata” Martino ?

50 years old, hails from Rosario, in Argentina,(like a certain Lionel Messi) until recently was the coach of Newell’s Old Boys whom he led to the Clausura last season as well as to the semi-final stage of the Copa Libertadores this year.

Martino spent years coaching in Paraguay where he won four domestic titles with Libertda and Cerro Porteno and eventually coached the Senior National team that he proudly took to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, beaten by eventual champion, Spain!

“El Tata” is relatively  unknown outside of South America, given he has only ever managed in the south American continent.

                    Why “El Tata” ?

The world had expected an in house replacement in person in person of Luis Enrique for example, but the unfruitful experience of  last season with Villanova’s in house temporary replacement, Jordi Roura,  as he underwent treatment must have weighed in, negatively.

Some thought it could be “el loco”  Marcelo Bielsa of Athletico Bilbao but info. reaching me was that his erratic character and age, though his philosophy would have been great for Barça, weighed in against him.

The truth is Barcelona had very little options available and With the season just around the corner, most of the top managers were taken, so Barcelona didn’t have much choice.

Unfortunate rumors have it that Lionel Messi put in a word for his compatriot and judging by the fact that one of El Tata’s new assistant was Messi’s coach at age 10 could further solidify this claim. Most especially when El Tata admitted publicly of Messi’s input.

When the world’s most prized player backs a coach it does help, though it could backfire big time soon!

Should We expect a Philosophy clash?

judging from the past,”El Tata’s teams play a very offensive game. in fact he shares the philosophy held by his mentor and pep Guardiola’s mentor Marcelo Bielsa. Favoring attack built around a 4-3-3 system like that of Barcelona. He is a fan of attacking, free-flowing football.

Martino will,i believe, keep to the 4-3-3 formation which is familiar to the players and continue to encourage the team to play a high pressing game.

         Major Hurdles to expect?

Shortage of Time: The Spanish season kicks off soon and with some Barcelona players who were at the just concluded Confederations cup still not back in full gear, El Tata might have very little time to influence the team into the mold he would love to .

But the consolation here is that he is going to be surrounded by very intelligent and high standard players who adjust easily in ayear just before the World Cup..

Central Defence: Barcelona desperately needs to buy a central defender and a world class one at that. Once again they conceded the two goals via the central defence errors vs. Bayern and they have not months to sign a player but just days as the transfer window closes soon. If a solution is not found to this problem with Puyol not getting any younger, Barcelona will struggle to dominate at all fronts once again!

The Messi Influence factor: though loved by many, if this appointment is not fruitful at one point our cynical world will witness sharp criticisms on Messi’s shoulders for the part played In his appointment and this risks to destabilize the team!

Tongues are waggling already as to why Messi should be allowed to wield so much power enough to influence such an important decision,Most especially with the fact that Neymar is coming in and Messi’s influence is expected to wane a little.

In all fairness,if anyone is to blame if the results do not follow as hoped it should be the Board of Directors who sign the contracts.

Furthermore if Messi should bear the brunt when things do not go well on the pitch as was the case last season, where is the problem in his opinion being heard and taken into consideration when the club takes such a sensitive decision?

Barcelona is a top team, with top players and in Messi, the world star of football, Neymar jr amongst others and it will be unfair to judge El Tata Martino negatively before the poor  fella starts to work, he has been quite a very successful coach till date he should be given time to at least try.

Having said that, he has inherited one of the most skilful teams ever assembled but unfortunately for him, he has the pressure of making them win, and win beautifully  in “Barcelona style”.

One thing is for sure anyway, it is going to be a fascinating season in Spain
